Sunny Start to the School Year: Staying Cool & Hydrated

Families Can Help Students Prepare

A few simple steps at home can help students stay comfortable, hydrated and ready to learn during warm weather:

  • Send a labeled, refillable water bottle to school each day. Encourage students to drink water regularly throughout the day.
  • Start the day hydrated. Drinking water with breakfast and before leaving for school can help students begin the day prepared for warm temperatures.
  • Choose lightweight, comfortable clothing appropriate for warm weather and school activities.
  • Apply sunscreen before school, particularly for students who will spend time outdoors during recess, lunch, physical education, or other activities.

CDPH recommends regular hydration, access to shade, and reducing time spent in direct sun during the warmest portions of the day.

Monitoring Conditions at Our Schools

FVSD staff will continue to monitor local weather conditions and take appropriate steps to help keep students safe and comfortable throughout the school day.

One of the tools available to schools and families is the National Weather Service HeatRisk Tool, which provides a seven-day forecast of potential heat-related risk. Unlike temperature alone, HeatRisk considers factors including how unusual the heat is for a particular location and time of year, the duration of the heat, and humidity. Risk is identified on a five-level scale ranging from Little to None (green) to Extreme (magenta).

This information can help schools make informed decisions about outdoor activities, physical education, recess, and other activities during periods of elevated heat.

Working Together for a Safe Start

The first days of school are exciting ones as students reconnect with friends, meet their teachers and settle into new routines. Taking a few extra precautions during warm weather can help ensure that students can focus on what matters most — learning, growing and enjoying a great start to the school year.

Families are encouraged to stay aware of local conditions and make hydration part of their student's daily school routine.

We can't wait to welcome our students back to FVSD on Wednesday for another outstanding year of learning!
