The Art of Connection
Hexagonal Thinking is a visual learning strategy often used in literature to connect complex themes and character arcs. By applying this strategy to community building during the first week of school, Talbert educators gave students a tactile, visual way to share who they are beyond their academic work.
The hand-drawn tiles showcased incredible student creativity. Some T-Birds created intricate artwork around their favorite inspirational quotes, while others highlighted personal passions—from martial arts and digital illustration to club soccer and family traditions. As students placed their hexagons side-by-side, they discussed why certain sides should touch, finding meaningful links between seemingly different ideas.
Fostering a Culture of Belonging
"Activities like this set the tone for the entire school year," noted Talbert staff. "Middle schoolers are discovering who they are, and seeing visually that they are connected to their peers helps build empathy, open communication, and trust in the classroom."
The activity also encouraged students to reflect on what makes a positive school culture. Common themes that emerged on the tiles included kindness, encouragement from teachers, room for creative expression, and strong teamwork.
The finished Hexagonal Thinking Maps are now displayed in classrooms, serving as a daily visual reminder that while every Talbert T-Bird brings unique strengths to the table, they are all part of one connected community.
