California Department of Education (CDE)

The California Department of Education (CDE) is a state agency that oversees public education in California. It is headquartered in Sacramento, the state capital.

The department is responsible for funding, testing, and holding local educational agencies accountable for student achievement. Its mission is to provide leadership, assistance, oversight, and resources to ensure every Californian has access to a quality education.

The State Board of Education serves as the governing and policy-making body, while the State Superintendent of Public Instruction, a nonpartisan elected official, acts as the department's executive officer. Superintendents serve four-year terms. The current Superintendent of Public Instruction is Tony Thurmond, who serves as the chief spokesperson for public schools and provides educational policy and guidance to local school districts. Additionally, the Superintendent is an ex officio member of the governing boards for California's higher education system.
